Founded in 1963, we are a charitable organisation that acts as an umbrella body
for organisations working with children and young people in England and Northern Ireland. Through working in partnership, sharing knowledge, resources and services we have created a powerful, authoritative and influential voice to improve the lives of children and young people. Our partners include the semi-independent organisations and networks we host, the agencies and organisations we undertake projects with, as well as our members. Our membership is a multi-agency network of child education, health and social care, youth, early years and other children's services professionals.
Our staff have expertise covering all issues affecting children and young people today. For over 40 years, we have undertaken research, policy and development studies on behalf of central and local government, trusts, foundations and charitable bodies, and we are at the forefront of ensuring that our projects involve children and young people whose lives are affected by these issues.
Employment opportunities
NCB is organised into six departments as follows:
- Children's development: Leads on personal social health education (PSHE) and citizenship and the promotion of health and wellbeing for all children and young people across all settings of their lives, home, care, community, school and health.
- Play: The Children's Play Council (CPC) is an alliance of national and regional voluntary organisations, local authorities and partnerships promoting children's right to play and the development of play provision in England. Play England is a five-year project to promote strategies for free play and to create a lasting support structure for play providers in England. It is a key element of the Children's Play Initiative of the Big Lottery Fund.
- Policy and innovation: This is made up of the following four units:
The Participation Unit - working with the participation of children and
young people
Co-ordination of Black and other minority ethnic children and young
people's issues across NCB
The Early Childhood Unit - co-ordinates national networks concerned with early years issues
The Policy Unit - co-ordinates our policy work
- Research: Addresses a broad range of children's issues, including questions of policy and practice. We participate in the wider research agenda outside NCB and work closely with policy makers and practitioners to ensure that our findings contribute to meeting children's needs and current service developments.
- Social inclusion: Comprises units with an interest in working to ensure the inclusion and enhanced life chances of potentially marginalised/excluded children.
- Strategy and communications: Comprises fundraising, marketing, membership, publishing, media relations, conferences and training, library and information, finance and information technology, administration and human resources.
