The Children & Young People's Empowerment Project is a voluntary sector organisation based in northeast Sheffield, working with children and young people between the ages of eight and 25 to develop the skills, knowledge and experience needed to enable them to engage in the decision-making processes that affect their lives.
Our key goals are to develop and refine a co-ordinated strategic approach to empowering children and young people, enabling their needs, views and issues to influence local decision-making structures and service provision, and to enable young people to participate fully in the regeneration of their area.
Our aims are to:
- Increase the involvement of children and young people in decision-making processes, seeking creative ways of enabling them to contribute to improvements within their neighbourhoods and wider communities
- Increase children and young people's skills base, through training and personal development, so that they can effectively engage with decision-making structures and access services relevant to their needs and personal development, and to develop projects and activities to meet their identified needs
- Work with other organisations and projects to effect change to systems and structures, so that they can better serve the needs of children and young people
- Develop, deliver and promote models that remove barriers to children and young people's participation, and enable decision makers to work with children and young people in the planning and execution of services
- Provide training to organisations and projects that promote good youth work practice, including participation and empowerment practices
- Develop an umbrella body to support and co-ordinate voluntary youth sector organisations and activity, to provide training and networking and partnership development, sharing of good practice and information exchange.
Employment opportunities
We employ a project manager who oversees the development and strategic direction of the organisation as well as managing staff and budgets. Experienced youth participation workers set up projects and groups with young people, and deliver training and support to young people with a variety of issues. The project also employs a qualified accountant who takes care of the financial work and an experienced administrator who supports the running of the projects as well as all the office and general administration tasks.
Employment policy
We see ourselves as an equal opportunity employer and welcome applications from anyone regardless of their ethnic origin, gender or sexual orientation. All current staff have an up-to-date Criminal Records Bureau check and new employees would be expected to undergo the same.
Training and career development
Staff are encouraged to undergo personal development training and follow a range of opportunities linked to organisational targets. All staff undergo regular supervision meetings as well as annual appraisals.
Salary and benefits
All staff are given the opportunity to join the company pension scheme with CHILYPEP making an eight per cent contribution. Staff have 38 days' paid holidays a year and a generous sick leave allowance.
Key partnerships
We work with a range of organisations, both in the statutory and voluntary sector. We engage in work with schools as well as working with the local Sheffield City Council and are looking to develop work within the business community.
