City of Westminster

Think of London and you think of Westminster: home to the Houses of Parliament, the shops of Oxford Street and the most famous landmarks in the country. But it is also home to the council that sets the standards others follow, being judged excellent for three years running and Local Government Chronicle Council of the Year for delivering services within an increasingly diverse city.
We are ambitious for children and young people and are judged to have excellent capacity to improve our already high-performing services. We are in the process of establishing a free-standing children's services department to take the next steps in building a service that will lead in the delivery of Every Child Matters.

Employment opportunities

We are well on the way with establishing children's centres and extended school services across the city. We are now looking to develop models for localised, integrated, multi-disciplinary working that focuses our energies on early intervention and prevention. We want to preserve the best of professionalism, but break down barriers of misunderstanding and bureaucracy that may get in the way of effective working. We are using the latest technology across the city to free up workers' time for direct client work, and to give you the flexibility you need to work efficiently.

Best practice

The strengths of our children's social care services are well known, and we have made significant improvements in our education services for children and young people over the past years. We set high standards for performance and have a string of prizes and rewards in recognition for the work we do.

Employment policy

We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and are striving to build a workforce representative of our community. We recognise staff achievement through a generous reward policy.

Training and career development

We take your development seriously and have a strong culture of performance management to support workers in achieving their best while maintaining a healthy work-life balance. This has been recognised through our Beacon award for Supporting Social Care Workers, numerous prizes for our innovative and effective training programmes, and Investors in People accreditation across the service.
We offer qualifications in management, secondments and traineeships for social work qualifications, access to a range of NVQs, and have strong connections with universities to provide development for graduates. We have an active Black and minority ethnic staff group and support aspiring staff through an effective coaching programme and targeted training to make sure that all achieve their best.

Salary and benefits

We offer generous annual leave, an interest-free season ticket loan, excellent pension scheme, staff discount card, free swimming facilities, and a recruitment and retention package for social workers.

The future

In a year's time we will have had our joint area review and we want to have recognition for the excellent children's service we provide. Our children's workforce development strategy sets a standard for what our children and young people want from those who work for them. Come and be part of a winning team.
