The move follows a gang prevention strategy from the Commission on Young People and Safety in Islington, which was set up in response to two stabbings in the London borough.
The officer will work with other agencies to get hold of research and information about individuals and about group activity.
They will also use police information to develop a profile of young adults aged 18 to 24, who are believed to be involved in gang and group criminal activity with young people.
